As the festive season of Diwali draws closer, Pune’s markets are bustling with activity, with shoppers crowding popular areas like Raviwar Peth, Bohri Aali, Mandai, and Tulshibaug. On Sunday, October 20, 2024, the markets were especially lively as people flocked to purchase a variety of items for their Diwali celebrations. Shoppers were seen buying home decor, electronic goods, lanterns, clothing, jewelry, earthen lamps, and rangoli supplies, signaling the city’s excitement for the upcoming festivities.
Sunday’s shopping rush was noticeably more vibrant compared to the previous day, with weekend shoppers taking advantage of their time off to visit the markets. The influx of people led to significant traffic congestion, particularly in central areas of Pune, with reports of long vehicle queues after 4 PM.
Popular Festive Items and Trends
One of the standout items this year is the 3D lantern, which has gained immense popularity. Vendors have introduced various discounts to attract customers, offering substantial savings on electronics, jewelry, clothing, and furniture, helping boost sales during the festive season. These discounts have been successful in drawing large crowds to the markets.
A prominent trend this Diwali is the increased demand for eco-friendly products. Many shops have begun stocking alternatives to traditional products, such as fabric and paper lanterns, clay lamps, and paper decorations, as people become more environmentally conscious. Tushar Gadre, a local shopkeeper, observed that customers are more interested in sustainable options this year. “There’s a growing awareness about the environmental impact of our celebrations, and people are opting for eco-friendly products,” he explained.
Heavy Footfall and Extended Shopping Hours
The textile markets in Pune have also experienced significant foot traffic, particularly in stores specializing in ready-made garments and children’s wear. Many shops have extended their hours, opening early in the morning and staying open late into the night to accommodate the growing number of shoppers. This extended availability allows customers more flexibility in choosing when to visit, as the markets continue to fill with people excited to prepare for the holiday.
Shopper Sentiments
For many, shopping for Diwali is a cherished annual tradition. Ritika Mohite, one of the many shoppers in the bustling markets, shared her enthusiasm, saying, “Shopping during Diwali is something we look forward to each year. It doubles the joy of the festival when we get to buy things that match our taste.”
Rutuja Landge echoed similar sentiments, describing her shopping experience in Pune’s busy markets. “There’s a different kind of satisfaction in finding the perfect item in a bustling market. It’s a unique experience every time.”
